How To Calculate The Area Of A Hexagon

A regular hexagon splits into six equilateral triangles, which makes its area a short formula involving the square root of three. One side length is enough to find everything else.

Quick Answer

A = 1.5 x sqrt(3) x s^2, or A = 0.5 x perimeter x apothem

A
The area of the hexagon
s
The side length of the regular hexagon
apothem
The distance from the centre to the middle of a side
perimeter
Six times the side length

Square the side length, multiply by 1.5 times the square root of 3. A hexagon with sides of 6 has an area of 93.5307, and the same value comes from half the perimeter times the apothem of 5.1962.

What Is The Area Of A Hexagon?

A regular hexagon has six equal sides and six equal angles of 120 degrees. The word regular is essential, because an irregular hexagon has no single formula and must be split into triangles and added up.

The area formula comes from six equilateral triangles. Draw lines from the centre to each vertex and the hexagon falls into six equilateral triangles whose side is the hexagon side, and each has area the square root of three over four times s squared.

Six of those triangles give one and a half times the square root of three times s squared, which is about 2.598 times s squared. This constant is worth remembering because it converts a side length straight into an area.

The apothem is the perpendicular distance from the centre to the middle of a side, and for a hexagon it is the square root of three over two times the side. With a side of 6 the apothem is 5.1962, slightly less than the side itself.

The general polygon formula, half the perimeter times the apothem, works for any regular polygon and gives the same answer. Half of 36 times 5.1962 is 93.5307, which matches the triangle method exactly.

The circumradius equals the side length. A circle drawn through all six vertices has radius s, so a hexagon with sides of 6 fits inside a circle of radius 6, and that circle has an area of 113.0973.

The hexagon tiles the plane perfectly. Six hexagons meet at every vertex with no gaps, which is why honeycomb, paving and hexagonal grids all use the shape and why bees are such efficient builders.

It is the most efficient shape for enclosing area with a given perimeter. Among shapes that tile, the hexagon needs the least wall for the most floor, which is why it appears in everything from city planning studies to heat exchanger design.

A cube viewed corner-on shows a regular hexagon. The shadow of a cube lit along a body diagonal is a hexagon, which is a handy way to see why sixfold symmetry appears in crystal structures.

Converting from the apothem is common in construction. If you know the distance across the flats, divide by 0.8660254 to get the side, then apply the area formula. Bolt heads and nuts are specified this way.

The interior angle of 120 degrees makes hexagons mechanically stable. Three struts meeting at a vertex share the load evenly, which is why hexagonal lattice structures are strong for their weight.

For a quick estimate, two and a half times the side squared is close enough for most field work. The exact constant is 2.5980762, and the shortcut is within about four percent.

Hexagonal grids appear in game design because a hexagon has six neighbours at equal distance, unlike the four of a square grid or the eight uneven neighbours of a triangle grid.

In optics, a hexagonal aperture produces diffraction spikes arranged with sixfold symmetry, which is why some telescope images show a six pointed star around bright stars.

Packaging engineers use hexagons for tubes and containers because the shape nests without wasted space between units, which is exactly why honeycomb cardboard exists.

When specifying a hexagonal window or panel, the dimension usually quoted is across the flats, so halve it and divide by 0.8660254 to recover the side before applying the area formula.

The constant can be derived a second way. A regular hexagon is half of a regular hexagram, and counting those triangles gives the same 2.5980762 factor that the equilateral triangle route produces.

How To Calculate The Area Of A Hexagon

  1. 1

    Confirm the hexagon is regular

The formula only applies when all six sides are equal. An irregular hexagon has to be divided into triangles and handled piece by piece.

  2. 2

    Square the side length

With a side of 6, the square is 36. The area scales with the square of the side, so doubling the side multiplies the area by four.

  3. 3

    Multiply by the constant

1.5 times 1.7320508 is 2.5980762, and 2.5980762 times 36 is 93.5307. This is the area in the same square units as the side.

  4. 4

    Cross-check with the apothem

The apothem is 0.8660254 times 6, which is 5.1962. Half the perimeter times the apothem is 18 times 5.1962, giving the same 93.5307.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying the formula to an irregular hexagon

An irregular hexagon has no single area formula. It must be split into triangles or treated as a polygon with known vertex coordinates.

  • Forgetting to square the side

The area grows with the square of the side. Multiplying 2.5980762 by 6 instead of 36 gives 15.5885, which is six times too small.

  • Confusing the apothem with the side

The apothem is 0.8660254 times the side, not equal to it. Using 6 as the apothem in the half perimeter times apothem formula inflates the area by about 15 percent.

  • Using the circumradius where the apothem belongs

The circumradius equals the side, but the apothem is smaller. Mixing them changes the answer by a factor of 1.1547 in the wrong direction.

  • Treating the hexagon as a circle

A hexagon covers about 82.7 percent of its circumscribed circle. Using pi times 6 squared gives 113.0973 instead of the correct 93.5307.

  • Mixing units between the side and the area

A side in centimetres gives an area in square centimetres. Reporting the number as square metres, or converting the side but not the area, breaks the result.

FAQ

What is the formula for the area of a hexagon?

For a regular hexagon, area equals 1.5 times the square root of 3 times the side squared, which is about 2.5980762 times the side squared.

How do you find the area of a hexagon with only the apothem?

Divide the apothem by 0.8660254 to recover the side, then apply the area formula. Equivalently, the area is 2 times the square root of 3 times the apothem squared.

What is the apothem of a hexagon?

The perpendicular distance from the centre to the middle of a side. For a regular hexagon it equals 0.8660254 times the side length, so a side of 6 gives an apothem of 5.1962.

How many triangles make up a hexagon?

Six equilateral triangles, drawn from the centre to each vertex. Each has area root three over four times the side squared, and six of them give the full area.

What is the difference between across the flats and across the corners?

Across the corners is twice the side, because the circumradius equals the side. Across the flats is twice the apothem, which is 1.7320508 times the side.

Can I use the hexagon area formula for a honeycomb cell?

Yes, if the cell is regular. Honeycomb cells are slightly irregular, so measure the side you have and treat the result as an approximation.
