Calories Burned Calculator
Every activity has a MET value, and one MET is what you burn sitting still. Multiply that by your weight and the minutes, and you have the energy cost of the session.
Calories burned
294
- Calories per minute
- 9.8
- Calories per hour
- 588

Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.
The formula this calculator uses
calories per minute = MET x 3.5 x weight in kg / 200
- MET
- The metabolic equivalent of the task, sitting still is 1
- 3.5
- The millilitres of oxygen per kilogram per minute that one MET represents
- weight
- Body mass in kilograms, pounds divided by 2.2
- 200
- The divisor that converts the oxygen figure into calories per minute
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Multiply the MET by 3.5
MET 8 times 3.5 is 28 millilitres of oxygen per kilogram per minute. This is the oxygen uptake the activity demands.
- 2
Scale by body weight and divide by 200
28 times 70 is 1960, and 1960 divided by 200 is 9.8 calories a minute. Heavier bodies burn more at the same intensity.
- 3
Multiply by the minutes
9.8 times 30 is 294 calories for the session, which is 588 an hour at the same pace.
- 4
Put the number in context
294 calories is about 38.1818 grams of fat mass equivalent, and four sessions like this a week add up to 1176 calories.
