How To Convert Celsius To Fahrenheit Calculator
Two things are happening in the temperature conversion, and keeping them apart is the whole skill: one scales the size of a degree, the other moves where zero sits.
Temperature in Fahrenheit
77
- Same reading in Kelvin
- 298.15
- Round trip back to Celsius (check)
- 25
Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.
The formula this calculator uses
F = C x 9/5 + 32
- C
- Temperature in degrees Celsius
- 9/5
- Ratio of degree sizes — 180 Fahrenheit degrees per 100 Celsius degrees
- 32
- Offset: water freezes at 0 C but 32 F
- F
- Temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Decide whether you have a reading or a change
A thermometer reading gets the full formula with the +32. A rise or fall gets only the 9/5 scaling. Mixing these two cases is the single most common mistake.
- 2
Multiply by nine-fifths first
25 x 9/5 = 45. Doing the addition first would give (25 + 32) x 1.8 = 102.6, which is wrong; order matters because these are not commutative operations.
- 3
Add 32 for a reading
45 + 32 = 77, so 25 C is 77 F. Skip this step entirely if you converted a temperature difference rather than a value.
- 4
Round-trip as a check
Feed 77 back through (77 - 32) x 5/9 and confirm you return to 25. Any mismatch localises the error immediately.
- 5
Round to match your input
A reading given to whole degrees does not justify decimal places in the answer. Report 77 F rather than 77.0000 F.
