Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.

The formula this calculator uses

rank percentile = (class size - rank) / class size x 100

rank
Your position, counting from the top of the class
N
Class size, every student on the list
percentile
Share of the class you outrank, as a decimal

How to check the result by hand

  1. 1

    Get the class size

Every student on the ranked list, including any who transferred or withdrew during the year if the school includes them. Use the denominator the school actually used.

  2. 2

Get your rank and its direction

Confirm whether the school counts from the top or the bottom. If it counts from the bottom, subtract it from the class size first to get the top-down rank.

  3. 3

    Count the students you outrank

Four hundred and eighty minus twelve leaves four hundred and sixty eight. This is the numerator, and it is the number of students below you.

  4. 4

    Divide by the class size

Four hundred and sixty eight over four hundred and eighty is 0.975, a rank percentile of ninety seven point five, meaning you finished above ninety seven point five percent of the class.

  5. 5

Round to the coarse band if needed

Twelve over four hundred and eighty times four is 0.1, which rounds up to the first quartile. Any rank in the top quarter of the class lands in the same band.
