The Volume Of A Cube Calculator
A cube is the one solid where a single measurement determines everything, which makes it the cleanest place to see how length, area and volume scale differently.
Volume

- Surface area
- 150
- Face diagonal
- 7.0711
- Space diagonal
- 8.6603
Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.
The formula this calculator uses
volume = side^3
- V
- Volume enclosed, in cubic units
- s
- Length of any edge
- A
- Total surface area, in square units
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Measure any edge
One measurement is enough because every edge of a cube is identical. If the edges differ, you have a rectangular prism and need a different formula.
- 2
Cube the measurement
Multiply the side by itself, then by itself again. A side of five gives twenty five and then one hundred and twenty five, not fifteen.
- 3
Attach cubic units
Centimetres give cubic centimetres, metres give cubic metres. Divide cubic centimetres by a thousand to convert to litres.
- 4
Work out the surface area separately if needed
Six times the side squared, which for a side of five is one hundred and fifty. It is a different unit and a different question, so it is never added to the volume.
- 5
Check the answer against the surface area
For a side larger than six, the volume exceeds the surface area numerically. That is normal and not a sign of an error, because the two are measured in different units.
