Employee Turnover Calculator
Employee turnover measures how fast people leave. Divide separations by the average headcount and you get the rate that HR benchmarks against the industry.

Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.
The formula this calculator uses
turnover rate = separations / average headcount
- separations
- The number of people who left in the period
- average headcount
- The mean of the starting and ending counts
- retention
- One minus the turnover rate
- period
- The window the separations were counted over
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Count the separations
Eighteen people left during the period. Count voluntary resignations and involuntary dismissals together for the headline figure.
- 2
Find the average headcount
Starting at 120 and ending at 130 averages to 125. Using the starting count alone would understate the rate for a growing team.
- 3
Divide
18 divided by 125 is 0.144, so the turnover rate is 14.4 percent. The retention rate is the complement, 85.6 percent.
- 4
Annualise if the period is shorter
For a six month window multiply by twelve over six. The example period is already twelve months, so the annualised rate matches at 14.4 percent.
