Extra Credit Calculator
Extra credit only helps if you add it to the denominator as well as the numerator. Do that and the new grade is a single division away.
New grade
83.64%
- Current grade
- 82.00%
- Points gained
- 1.64%
- Extra points needed for the target
- 17
- Total points available
- 110
Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.
The formula this calculator uses
new grade = (points earned + extra earned) / (points possible + extra possible)
- points earned
- The points scored before extra credit
- points possible
- The total available before extra credit
- extra earned
- The extra credit points actually scored
- extra possible
- The extra credit points on offer
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Find the current grade
82 points out of 100 is 82 percent. This is the baseline the extra credit is measured against.
- 2
Add the extra points to both halves
Ten extra points earned out of ten offered makes the new fraction 92 over 110. Both numbers move, which is the step most people skip.
- 3
Divide
92 divided by 110 is 0.836364, so the new grade is 83.6364 percent. The gain over the original 82 percent is 1.6364 points.
- 4
Check the target
To reach 90 percent on 110 available points you would need 99 points earned, which is 17 more than the current 82. The ten on offer are not enough, so the target is out of reach.
