How To Convert A GPA To A Percentage Calculator
A GPA only means anything once the scale is known, so conversion is a division by that scale.
Percentage of the scale
85.00%
- Equivalent on the 4.0 scale
- 3.4
Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.
The formula this calculator uses
percentage = GPA / scale
- GPA
- Grade point average as reported by the school
- scale
- The top of the GPA scale, such as 4.0, 5.0 or 10.0
- percentage
- The GPA as a share of the scale maximum
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Find the scale the GPA was reported on
It is printed on the transcript or stated in the school handbook. If it is missing, ask, because assuming 4.0 for a 10 point scale is the single most damaging error in this conversion.
- 2
Check whether the average is weighted
A weighted average can exceed the nominal scale maximum. If it does, a plain linear conversion produces a figure above one hundred percent and is the wrong tool.
- 3
Divide the GPA by the scale
Eight point five over ten is 0.85. This is the share of the scale maximum that the average represents.
- 4
Multiply by a hundred for a percentage
0.85 is eighty five percent. Keep the precision of the source figure, so a 3.375 on a 4.0 scale stays at 84.375 percent rather than being rounded early.
- 5
Optionally restate it on the 4.0 scale
Multiply the share by four, so 0.85 becomes 3.4. This is the figure most international readers will recognise.
