How To Convert A Percentage To A Letter Grade Calculator
A grade scale is the table that turns a percentage into a letter. The cut-offs differ between schools, so the first step is always to check which scale you are being marked against.
Letter grade
B
- Grade points
- 3
- Points to the next grade
- 2
- Points above the pass mark
- 25
- Band
- 83 to 86
2 more percentage points would move this into the B+ band at 87.
The formula this calculator uses
letter = the band the percentage falls into
- percentage
- The score as a percentage of the total marks
- letter
- The letter grade the percentage falls into
- points
- Grade points the letter is worth on a four point scale
- cut-off
- The lowest percentage still inside a band
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Check which scale your school uses
The straight ten point scale and the plus and minus scale give different letters for the same percentage. An 89 is an A on the ten point scale but a B plus on most plus and minus scales, so the scale has to be settled first.
- 2
Find the band the percentage falls into
Read down the cut-offs until the percentage drops below one. On the standard scale 85 sits below 90 and at or above 80, so it is a B. Nothing is calculated here; it is a lookup.
- 3
Read off the grade points
A B is worth 3.0 on the four point scale. On the plus and minus scale the letter would come with 3.3 for a B plus, 3.0 for a B and 2.7 for a B minus, so the finer scale gives a more precise number.
- 4
Measure the distance to the next band
Subtract the percentage from the next cut-off. An 85 on the standard scale is 2 points below the 87 needed for a B plus on the finer scale, and 5 points below the 90 that would make it an A on the ten point scale.
- 5
Apply your school's rounding rule last
Rounding to the nearest whole number can push an 89.5 into the next band. Do the rounding after choosing the scale and after the final course grade is computed, not on individual assignments, because the rules usually differ.
