Running Pace Calculator

Pace is time divided by distance, and getting the division the right way round is most of the skill.

Pace in minutes per kilometre

Speed in kilometres per hour
12
Speed in miles per hour
7.4565

Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.

The formula this calculator uses

pace = total minutes / distance

t
Finish time converted to total minutes
d
Distance covered, in kilometres
pace
Minutes per kilometre
speed
Kilometres per hour, the reciprocal view of the same run

How to check the result by hand

  1. 1

Convert the finish time to minutes

Multiply the hours by sixty and add the minutes. A run of one hour and five minutes becomes sixty-five minutes, which is the only time figure the pace formula uses.

  2. 2

Confirm the distance is in kilometres

The formula pairs minutes with kilometres. If the distance is in miles, either convert it by multiplying by 1.609344 or expect the answer in minutes per mile instead.

  3. 3

    Divide time by distance

Fifty minutes over ten kilometres is five minutes per kilometre. Dividing the other way, distance by time, gives speed rather than pace and will produce a nonsensical small number.

  4. 4

Convert to speed if you want it

Divide the distance by the time in hours. Ten kilometres in fifty minutes is ten divided by 0.8333 hours, which is twelve kilometres per hour. It is the same run expressed the other way up.

  5. 5

Convert to minutes per mile for comparison

Multiply the pace by 1.609344. Five minutes per kilometre becomes 8.04672 minutes per mile. The number grows, which is correct because a mile is longer than a kilometre.
