How To Convert Pounds To Kilograms Calculator

Pounds to kilograms is one multiplication. The only real decision is whether you use the exact factor, or a mental shortcut that quietly overshoots by an amount that grows with every pound you add.

Weight in kilograms

Same weight in grams
81,646.6266
Same weight in ounces

Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.

The formula this calculator uses

kg = lb x 0.45359237

lb
Weight in avoirdupois pounds
0.45359237
Exact kilograms in one pound, fixed by international agreement in 1959
kg
Mass in kilograms, the SI base unit
2.2046226218
Pounds in one kilogram, the reciprocal used for the return trip

How to check the result by hand

  1. 1

Confirm you are working in avoirdupois pounds

The pound used for body weight, groceries and shipping is the avoirdupois pound, and it is the one the 1959 agreement defines. Troy pounds, used for precious metals, are a different unit with a different mass, so a figure quoted for gold or silver does not convert with this factor. If the source does not say which pound it means, it almost certainly means the ordinary one.

  2. 2

Multiply by 0.45359237, keeping the full factor

For 180 lb the calculation is 180 x 0.45359237 = 81.6466266 kg. Resist the temptation to shorten the factor to 0.454 or 0.45; those abbreviations are where the avoidable error enters. The factor costs nothing to type and it is exact, so there is no trade-off to weigh.

  3. 3

Round-trip the answer as a check

Feed the result back through the reciprocal: 81.6466266 x 2.2046226218 returns 180 lb. If you land anywhere else, one of the two legs used a shortcut or the wrong direction. This check costs a few seconds and it localises the mistake immediately, which is why it belongs in the routine rather than in the emergency.

  4. 4

Restate the mass in whichever unit the situation wants

The same 180 lb is 81646.6266 g, 2880 oz and 12.8571429 stone. Grams suit parcels and labels, ounces suit food and postage, and stones suit body weight in the United Kingdom. Converting onwards is a single multiplication or division each time, so carry the full-precision kilogram figure and derive the rest from it.

  5. 5

Round once, at the end, to a precision the input supports

A bathroom scale reading to the nearest pound does not justify seven decimal places, and a baggage allowance does not either. Carry every digit through the intermediate steps and round only what you write down. Rounding mid-calculation and then rounding again at the end compounds two errors for no benefit.
