How To Rewrite A Sentence Calculator

A rewrite is not a translation of meaning but of register. The facts stay where they are; what changes is how much space they take and who they sound like they are for.

Cuts filler words and wordy phrases. The meaning survives intact. Every substitution below is listed so you can see exactly what moved and put back anything you disagree with.

What changed

  • in order to→to
  • it is necessary for you to→you must
  • that is located in→in
  • utilise→use
  • basically→(removed)

1 passive construction found: is located. The passive check never rewrites anything on its own, because turning a passive clause back into an active one needs to know who did the thing.

The rules are phrase-level, so they are precise but narrow: they will catch the common wordy patterns and leave everything else alone. Read the output once before you send it.

The formula this calculator uses

rewrite = apply the strategy's substitution table in order, then delete its filler list

strategy
The register being targeted: concise, formal, casual, plain or direct
n_sub
How many substitutions the table actually applied
R
The reduction in word count, as a percentage

How to check the result by hand

  1. 1

    Paste one sentence

One sentence at a time, because the tables are phrase-level and a paragraph produces a wall of separate changes that cannot be reviewed. Paste the sentence you are least sure about first.

  2. 2

    Pick the register you need

Concise for cutting, formal for a contract, casual for a chat, plain for a wide audience, direct for starting on the point. The four other strategies are one dropdown away, so trying a second one costs nothing.

  3. 3

    Read the output

The rewritten sentence is the first thing on the panel. Read it as a sentence rather than as a diff, because a substitution that is individually correct can still leave an odd rhythm.

  4. 4

    Check the change list

Every substitution the table applied is listed, source and target, so you can put back anything you disagree with. A change you did not expect is usually a table entry you did not know about.

  5. 5

Look at the counts and the passive flag

Words, characters and the percentage saved make the trade measurable, and the passive count tells you how much of the sentence avoids saying who did the thing.
