Study Time Calculator
Study time is not guesswork. The credit hour already encodes an expected workload, and multiplying it out turns a vague intention into a weekly number you can plan around.
Study hours per week
30
- Total hours across the term
- 450
- Average hours per day
- 4.2857
- Term hours per credit
- 30
Values update as you type. This calculator covers the single scenario its formula assumes — see Common Mistakes for what it leaves out.
The formula this calculator uses
hours = credits x hours per credit
- credits
- Credit hours enrolled this term
- hoursPerCredit
- Independent study hours expected per credit, conventionally 2
- weeks
- Length of the term in teaching weeks
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Add up your credit hours
A typical full load is 15 credits, which is five three credit courses. Part time study might be six or nine.
- 2
Multiply by the hours each credit expects
The Carnegie convention is two hours of independent work per credit hour. Fifteen credits therefore implies 30 hours a week outside class.
- 3
Multiply by the length of the term
A fifteen week term turns 30 weekly hours into 450 hours in total. A ten week term gives 300.
- 4
Divide down to a daily figure
Thirty hours a week is about 4.3 hours a day across seven days, or six hours a day across five working days.
- 5
Check it against a fortnight of real tracking
Log what you actually spend for two weeks. A consistent gap in either direction tells you whether the course is unusual or whether you are under-working it.
