The formula this calculator uses
net pay = gross pay - taxes - other deductions
- net
- Take home pay, what arrives in your account
- gross
- Total pay before any deduction
- tax
- Combined income and payroll taxes
- other
- Retirement contributions, insurance, union dues
How to check the result by hand
- 1
Start with gross pay for one period
Use the same period throughout. Monthly gross with monthly deductions, or annual with annual. Mixing a monthly gross with an annual deduction produces a number that is out by a factor of twelve.
- 2
Add up the tax rates
Federal, state and payroll rates added together give the combined rate. Twelve plus five plus 7.65 is 24.65 percent, which is the share of gross that goes to tax.
- 3
Multiply to get the total tax
24.65 percent of five thousand is one thousand two hundred and thirty two fifty. This is the single largest deduction for most people.
- 4
Add any other deductions
Retirement contributions, insurance premiums and anything else that is taken out. A hundred and fifty on top of the tax gives one thousand three hundred and eighty two fifty.
- 5
Subtract from gross to get net pay
Five thousand minus one thousand three hundred and eighty two fifty leaves three thousand six hundred and seventeen fifty. Divide by gross if you want the share you actually keep.
