Pet cover premiums depend heavily on the reimbursement rate, deductible and annual limit you pick. Build an estimate and see the annual vet bill at which the policy would start paying for itself.

Below about $1,282 of vet costs a year this policy costs you more than self-insuring; above it the cover wins. Accident and illness only — routine care needs a separate wellness plan.

How the premium estimate works

Accident and illness cover for dogs averages around $56 a month and for cats around $32 for an adult with a mid-range plan. We start there and adjust for your pet's age band, reimbursement level, deductible and annual limit — older pets cost considerably more and higher reimbursement tiers push premiums up further.

The break-even vet bill

Cover pays for itself when expected reimbursements exceed the annual premium. With a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement, reimbursement equals (bill − 500) × 0.80, so the bill must reach roughly the deductible plus the premium divided by the reimbursement rate before the policy is better than paying cash.

What pet insurance excludes

Pre-existing conditions are almost always excluded, and most policies do not cover routine care such as vaccinations unless you add a wellness plan. Enrol young and healthy; pre-existing exclusions are the single most common reason claims are denied.

Frequently asked questions

Is pet insurance worth it?

It depends on whether you could absorb a sudden several-thousand-dollar bill. If you could not, the policy is buying you the ability to say yes to treatment rather than saving money.

Why do premiums rise as my pet ages?

Claim frequency climbs steeply with age and so does the expected payout. Some insurers also reduce options at renewal, so check whether the policy is guaranteed renewable.

What is the difference between an annual limit and a lifetime limit?

An annual limit resets each policy year; a lifetime limit does not, which can leave an older pet with long-term conditions uncovered.
