How to use the PayPal fee calculator

  1. Enter the Transaction amount — the price or payment before the fee.
  2. Enter the Percentage fee PayPal charges (default 2.9%).
  3. Enter the Fixed fee per transaction (default $0.30).
  4. Read the result. The fee, the net you receive and the effective rate update as you type.

Worked example

A $100 payment at 2.9% plus a $0.30 fixed fee costs $3.20 in fees. You receive $96.80, and the $3.20 fee is an effective rate of 3.2% once the fixed fee is included.

The formula

Fee = amount x percentage / 100 + fixed

Net = amount - fee

Effective rate = fee / amount x 100

To charge a target net amount, divide it by (1 minus the percentage as a decimal), then add the fixed fee. To net $100 at 2.9% plus $0.30, charge about $103.31. The fixed fee makes the real percentage a little higher than the headline rate.

Frequently asked questions

How is the PayPal fee calculated?

PayPal takes a percentage of the amount plus a fixed fee per transaction. Multiply the amount by the percentage, divide by 100, then add the fixed fee. On $100 at 2.9% plus $0.30 the fee is $3.20.

How much do I receive after the fee?

Subtract the fee from the amount. On a $100 payment with a $3.20 fee you keep $96.80. The calculator shows this as 'You receive (net)'.

What is the effective fee rate?

The effective rate is the fee divided by the amount, times 100. A $3.20 fee on $100 is an effective rate of 3.2%, a little higher than the 2.9% headline because the fixed fee adds on top.

How do I charge to keep a target amount?

Divide your target by (1 minus the percentage as a decimal), then add the fixed fee. To net $100 at 2.9% plus $0.30, charge about $103.31. The formula is in the article.

Do the rates here match PayPal exactly?

The default 2.9% plus $0.30 is PayPal's standard US rate for receiving payments, but rates vary by country, currency and account type. Change the fields to match your actual rate.
