Stock Profit Calculator

See how much you actually made or lost on a stock trade. Enter the number of shares, the buy and sell prices, and any fees, and the calculator shows your total cost, proceeds, net profit and return on investment — updating the moment you change a number.

Estimates only. This tool is provided for educational purposes and is not financial advice. It models the figures you enter — it does not know your credit terms, local taxes, or fees. Talk to a licensed adviser before making a decision.

How to use the stock profit calculator

  1. Enter the Number of shares you bought and sold.
  2. Enter the Buy price per share — what you paid for each share.
  3. Enter the Sell price per share — what you sold each share for.
  4. Add any Commission & fees (brokerage, regulatory, spread) as a total round-trip cost.
  5. Read the result. Total cost, proceeds, net profit and return on investment update as you type.

Worked example

Buy 100 shares at $50 and sell at $55, with $10 in fees. Cost is $5,000, proceeds are $5,500, and after the $10 fee your net profit is $490 — a 9.8% return on the $5,000 you invested.

The formula

Total cost = shares × buy price

Total proceeds = shares × sell price

Net profit = proceeds − cost − fees

Return % = net profit ÷ cost × 100

Your return on investment is measured against the money you actually put in (total cost), not the proceeds. A small fee has a bigger effect on a small position than on a large one, so always enter the real round-trip commission.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate stock profit?

Multiply your shares by the sell price to get proceeds, multiply your shares by the buy price to get cost, then subtract cost and any fees. With 100 shares bought at $50 and sold at $55, profit before fees is $500; a $10 fee leaves $490.

What is return on investment (ROI)?

ROI is your net profit divided by what you invested (total cost), times 100. On a $5,000 cost and $490 profit, ROI is 9.8%. It shows efficiency, not just dollars.

Should I include fees?

Yes. Brokerage, regulatory and spread costs are real and reduce profit. Enter them as a total round-trip figure so your net profit reflects what you actually keep.

What if I sold at a loss?

The calculator handles losses too: net profit goes negative and ROI shows a negative percentage. When proceeds are below cost, you lost money on the trade.

Does this include dividends or taxes?

No. This is a simple trade-profit calculator based on buy and sell prices plus fees. It excludes dividends, interest and capital-gains tax, which you should track separately.
