How to use the tax bracket calculator
- Pick your filing status.
- Enter your taxable income (after deductions, not gross).
- Read the total tax, marginal rate and effective rate.
Marginal vs effective
Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income. Your effective rate is the average rate across all income, which is always lower because only the top slice is taxed at the highest rate.
A worked example
A single filer with $75,000 taxable income in 2024 pays 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on the next slice up to $47,150, and 22% above that. The total tax is about $12,268 and the effective rate is about 16.4%, even though the marginal rate is 22%.
These are 2024 brackets
Rates and thresholds change most years. This tool uses the 2024 federal brackets and excludes state tax, credits and the alternative minimum tax.
