Why a tip calculator helps

Tipping should be simple, but bills, taxes, split checks and round numbers make it fiddly — especially with a table full of people. A tip calculator removes the guesswork: enter the amount, choose a rate, and split the result so nobody overpays or underpays. It also keeps the math honest when the server suggests a pre-filled gratuity that may be higher than you intended.

The tip math

Tip = Bill × (Rate ÷ 100)

Total = Bill + Tip · Per person = Total ÷ People

In the US, tips are usually calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people tip on the full amount. This tool uses whatever bill figure you enter, so subtract tax first if you prefer the lower base.

Worked example

A $100 bill with an 18% tip gives a tip of $18 and a total of $118. Split between 2 people, each pays $59 (including $9 of tip). At 20% the total is $120 ($10 tip each). Small percentage moves add up across a year of dining out.

Choosing the right percentage

  • 15% — adequate service, counter or takeout.
  • 18% — good table service, the current US norm.
  • 20% — excellent service or large parties.
  • 25% — outstanding service or holiday rushes.

5 tipping tips

  • Check for auto-gratuity. Parties of six or more often have 18–20% added; don't double-tip.
  • Split before tipping. Divide the pre-tip bill, then apply the rate, to avoid tipping on top of a tip.
  • Round for servers. Rounding the per-person total up a dollar or two is a kind, cheap boost.
  • Tip on subtotal to save. If the bill includes tax, tipping on the subtotal lowers the amount slightly.
  • Use cash for control. Cash tips reach the server directly and avoid processing delays.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

15% is standard for adequate service, 18% for good and 20% for excellent in the US. For large groups a 18–20% auto-gratuity is common.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is acceptable; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly lower and common. This calculator tips on the full bill amount you enter.

How do I split a tip across a group?

Compute the total tip and total bill, then divide each by the number of people. Each person pays total ÷ people, tip included.

Is 20% too much for takeout?

For counter or takeout service 10% is typical; 15–20% is generous. Full table service usually warrants the higher end.

How is the per-person amount calculated?

Per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people. For the tip alone it is tip ÷ people. Rounding up to a whole dollar makes the split cleaner.
